The 4th Virginia, Company A was historically comprised mostly of farmers, merchants, and students from the southwestern
tip of Virginia. The 4th, along with the 2nd, 5th, 27th, and 33rd Virginia infantry Regiments comprised the legendary "Stonewall
Brigade". The 4th Virginia Company A was nicknamed the "Wythe Grays" after Wythe County, where the company originated.
The 4th Virginia Regiment served gallantly in most all of the major action in the east, eventually surrendering a pitiful
46 men at Appomattox out of 1487 men who had served in the regiment. A surgeon was the only staff officer present at Appomattox;
a captain and 5 lieutenants were all who were left among the field officers. The Wythe Grays of Company A surrendered a mere
4 men.
It is to the memory of these men of the 4th Virginia Infantry Company A that we, the recreated Wythe Grays, dedicate ourselves.
